Open house pick of the week: Maunalani Heights

July 2011 By Melissa Chang for HONOLULU MAGAZINE

It’s not likely that local artist Kelly Sueda will include the art pieces hanging throughout his Sierra Dr. home when he sells it, but it’s still worth a look when you go to open house this Sunday. This contemporary, custom-built home is remarkable in itself, with high ceilings and an open design that makes each room blend into one another. Even between floors, the second story can see down to the first story so you always feel connected. The large, detached studio has a full bath and a totally separate entry; in fact, you can enter from the other side of the property, so it could be as private or connected as you want. It could be used as a guesthouse, rental, office, or—since Sueda is an artist—as an artist’s studio. There are five bedrooms in all, but my favorite, of course, is the master, with a huge day bed built into the wall against the window to take in the view. The other bedrooms, for the kids, have been whimsically painted with unique designs. The renovated kitchen also sports fun, food-related decorations. Actually, there is art displayed throughout the entire home—after all, Sueda is a painter—so going to open house will be like browsing a gallery, as well. The art isn’t included in the sale, but it’s still something to see.The home was built in 1988 and remodeled in 2004, so it looks very new. As if that weren’t enough, since it’s at the top of the hill, there’s also an amazing view. If nothing else, take a break and make a trek up the hill this Sunday just to take in this extraordinary home.

Happy house hunting!
